Catherine Laws

Catherine Laws is a pianist and musicologist. She studied with Gillian Butterworth, and subsequently with Joan Dixon at York University. Since then, Catherine has focused primarily upon contemporary music, as a soloist but also as the keyboard player with amplified ensemble [rout], pianist with the chamber ensemble Black Hair, and in a piano duo with Frank Denyer. Catherine is currently an Artistic Research Fellow at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent, Belgium, an Associate Lecturer at University College Falmouth (Dartington Campus), and a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Plymouth. She has published articles on a number of composers, including Morton Feldman, György Kurtág, Richard Barrett, and on wider issues in contemporary music. She is currently completing a book on the relationship between music and language in the work of Samuel Beckett.
